Born on 27 June, 1983 at Phalaborwa, South Africa, Steyn is a right-arm fast bowler. Steyn, having learnt the bowling techniques from an African Coach Sajiv, took start from Northerns, a First-Class cricket team. He played his first match on 17 October,
2003. Demonstrating rock-breaking performance, Steyn soon earned repute as a marvelous pacer. In 2004, England was on tour to South Africa to play a Test series. Steyn was called by the National Team selectors to play the series. It was his first international
opportunity. Steyn appeared in his career’s first Test on 17 December, 2004 at Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Contrary to the expectations, Steyn could not impress anyone.
After this series, Steyn left for England to play county cricket. On his return, he again played for Northerns and displayed immense potential. He was again called to play another home Test series against the visiting team, New Zealand in the season of 2006-07.
