South African pace bowler Dale Steyn has suggested that bowlers need to be ‘street smart’ to bowl in the Subcontinent conditions, especially on the tricky decks of India.
“You have got to be street smart I suppose when you bowl in India,” Steyn stated at a press conference on Tuesday evening after a practice session in Mohali.
He stated that the bowlers need to vary their pace if they want to be successful during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011.
“You can’t bowl the same pace at the same place as the guys will work you out,” Steyn added.
He compared the pitch conditions back home to the spin-friendly decks of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750, saying that a bowler could easily get away due to the bounce in South Africa but in India, a bad delivery finds the ‘middle of the bat’ and races away for a boundary.
The 27-year-old right-arm fast bowler added that he himself had to change his plans during South Africa’s opening game against West Indies. Steyn started varying his pace and the gamble paid off as he took three crucial wickets.

The World Cup has been headlined by the performance of pace bowlers so far. Mitchell Johnson and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 as well as Steyn have left a strong mark in the early stages of the tournament.
Steyn reckoned the likes of Australian strike bowlers to that of ‘result-changing wicket-takers,’ adding that the mandatory ball change after 34 overs help the fast bowlers exert pressure on the opposition.
