Dale Sveum became the 52nd manager of the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, November 17 as the extensive search for managerial responsibility finally came to an end. It will become official on Friday, as Sveum will get a three-year contract which can
be extended to a fourth.
In the start of this month when Mike Quade was dismissed following an average performance of the club in the season and ending up losing more than 90 games, the Cubs were looking for a manager who can reenergise and reorganise the team.
Having served as the interim manager of the Milwaukee Brewers back in September 2008, Sveum has leadership qualities in his possession. Soon after he was installed as the Brewers’ interim manager, the team went to notch the National League Wild Card.
Svuem in his first appearance after the interview did not show excessive excitement. Poised, he referred to the 2008 stint with the Brewers where the team made their way into the post-season under his auspices.
"Once I got to manage that year, those 12 games and the four games in the playoffs, it was somewhere where I felt right at home and very comfortable doing," he said.
"It definitely whet the appetite a little bit," Sveum said. “I think we all want to do things, but until you get thrown in the fire, you don't know if it's the right thing for you, even if it's something you want to do.”
The general manager of the Chicago Cubs had stated that he will be happy if Sveum got the job as he was ready to manage the team, having familiarity with the Cubs. Also, the Chicago Cubs had initially kept secret as to who they would ultimately choose as
the manager of a club which has not won any World Series title for decades now, making it all the more important to give it a try this time.
It will be interesting to see what impact Sveum will have on the Cubs as they will be looking to him to guide the team to a successful 2012 regular season.
