Dale Sveum of the Chicago Cubs puts emphasis on accountability – MLB News
Months after previously unanticipated changes swept the Chicago Cubs, their new manager Dale Sveum, vows every effort will be put to attain success. To ensure this, there may not be a readily available flavour; nonetheless, his emphasis is on the players’
accountability if they fail to perform up to the mark.
The transition from Mike Quade, the former Chicago Cubs’ manager, to Dale Sveum has not been very tumultuous apart from the unavoidable ups and downs. Quade was dismissed soon after one of the worst seasons that the Chicago Cubs had in the recent past.
They had lost over 90 of their games in the season; a record that was not outdone by any other team. To remedy what had befallen the team and to redress other problems, the Cubs have seen remarkable changes.
Dale Sveum is one such change. Having had a considerably long period of time with the Milwaukee Brewers, Sveum is said to be the epitome of perfection as far as instilling competitive skills in the team.
While he is incredibly determined on putting everything in the right place, he also believes in accountability. Thus, when he was asked if a player failed to do what he was designated to do, he stated that the player would be held accountable.
"They're going to be held accountable," Sveum said. "It's not going to be OK. They won't be able to walk past me in the dugout."
The strictness exercised here is the demonstration of the intention to be a disciplinarian, while being friendly, also does not shirk away when it comes to being strict. Similarly, he addresses the question of building and re-building.
Since the arrival of the likes of Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer, who have got their respective designations in the team with years of enviable experience and bright career, there is a constant thought that the team is undergoing a phase of rebuilding.
However, Sveum believes it is not rebuilding. It is rather, in his words, building. "The plan is to win right now," Sveum said. "The long-term plan starts right now. We're not rebuilding, we're building."
Judging from the plans to fill the roster with a combination of experienced and young players shows that things are going well for the team so far. The planning involved here is indicative of the fact that the team will be far stronger than one might have
thought. .
Although Dale Sveum avoided making tall claims in his talk as he expressed his views about the future, it is clear that the Cubs are all set to come up with a surprise for all the top tier teams in the upcoming 2012 regular season.
