Dale Sveum talks of taking up the new challenge – MLB News
While Theo Epstein called Dale Sveum, the new manager of the Chicago Cubs in his first press conference on Friday, November 18, Dale vowed to take up the challenges head on.
Being pursued by the Boston Red Sox as well, Sveum was to join the Chicago Cubs after serving the Milwaukee Brewers as the hitting coach. The three year deal he has gotten with an option of a fourth year is one of the toughest challenges of his career which
spans 30 years now.
For the pursuit of the Boston Red Sox, Sveum stated that he was interviewed, but could sense the job was not there. The offer from the Cubs became his priority as he finalised the deal and is looking to working with the organisation.
"I think when you take a managing job, there are no concerns," Sveum said. "No matter where you're taking the job, you're going to have issues, obstacles, things in the past that have a chance of coming up again.”
A quick look at the Chicago Cubs record brings to fore the fact that the club has had some unimpressive stats. The team lost no less than 91 games this season, having only won 71.
Nonetheless, the new manager hired is fully aware of the challenges lying ahead. While he said ‘pain is inevitable and suffering your option’, he was essentially of the view that there does not have to be suffering.
"Obviously, it's a new year and there are new challenges all the time. Things in the past, you hope they don't pop up again, but we all know that's not the case with some people. We have to deal with that as it comes along."
Sveum spoke of the players as well specially that of Carlos Zambrano, the Cubs’ pitcher who had made retirement announcement after a loss in one of the games, but later said he had done it in anger. He stated that the Cubs will sit and talk with the pitcher.
It now remains to be seen how he puts some new life into the Cubs. The team will be looking to Sveum to guide them to some success in the coming seasons.
