Dallas Amateur sets new world record
The sports industry recognises a person as an ‘avid’ golfer if he or she has played at most 25 rounds in the whole year. If 25 rounds are what an avid golfer plays, what would a golfer who played 600 rounds in a year be called?
A crazy golfer might be the most suited term. Call him crazy or passionate; Richard Lewis, who belongs from Dallas, recently completed his 600th round of 2010 to be recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s most avid golfer.
Neither summer nor winter kept the 64-year-old golfer off the course. He had an aim and he completed it well. Lewis is a member of the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. The player had to wait until the TPC course
in Texas warmed up and he got to make his momentous 600th round. The Four Seasons members paid to accompany Lewis for his amazing 600th round. $8,800 were also raised that will contribute to the First Tee of Dallas program, which is a
charity program that helps young people with golf activities.
The president of the club, Frank Broyles, thought it was a remarkable thing for Lewis to make his record on the same course where the Byron Nelson Championship takes place. "Byron (Nelson) always said, 'Be good to the game and
give back' and that's what we've done here today," said Broyles.
Lewis beat the previous record of 586 rounds that were played in Ohio in 1998. Even after having 600 rounds in 2010, Richard wants to play more. He is hoping to play 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday, along with 54 holes on the following
two days and 18 holes on December 31st. This would then give the player 611 rounds for the year 2010.
"I thought 400 was tough and 500 was a stretch, but 600 was what I had in mind all the time," he told the PGA Tour website after shooting an 86."It's a huge relief and sense of accomplishment. I can't remember the last time I did
only 18 in a day."
Richard's girlfriend, Debbie Shaw, also accompanied him in some of the rounds and was very happy for him. Walking a total of 2,500 miles and hitting over 50,000 shots is not an easy task. Having made history, Richard should surely
be very proud of himself.
