Dallas Cowboys Anthony Spencer to start the season under the present contract – NFL News
The reports around Dallas Cowboys’ lack of interest in giving a long-term deal to linebacker Anthony Spencer has been confirmed now as the player’s agent Jordan Woy has said that the linebacker will play the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season under the present contract.
Spencer has been playing with the Cowboys since 2007, and after the end of his five-year contract, the Cowboys placed their tender on the player this year.
Spencer signed the tender in April while hoping to get a long-term deal in future. Earlier, some reports suggested that the player could get the desired deal even before the start of the regular season, but that did not happen.
Recently, it was reported that the Cowboys were not interested in giving him any long-term deal and it was also suggested that the team might release him after the 2012 season.
As per the recent development, Spencer is going to enter the season under the same contract, but he is still hoping to get a long-term deal towards the end of the upcoming season.
According to ESPN, Woy said of Spencer’s deal:
"We will start the season with his current contract. We will see what happens during the season. I'm sure we will have a discussion before the season ends."
By the looks of the things, Spencer’s future is now dependent on how he performs this year. If his performance takes the team to victories and helps its dream of winning the NFL title, there is no denying that Cowboys will retain him.
Cowboys will also have an option of once again placing their franchise tag on Spencer for the year 2013. If they do so, they will be able to prevent Spencer from hitting free agency next year.
However, if Spencer’s performance stays below par and the team fail to produce a good season, then the Cowboys might not be interested in signing him and both parties could part ways.
Anything is possible for Spencer, who has been doing considerably well for the team since becoming their regular starter back in 2009.
Cowboys will enter the 2012 season with a new defensive scheme and Spencer’s performance will be crucial for the success of the new scheme.
