Dallas Cowboys’ Bryan McCann arrested and charged with public intoxication
Bryan McCann, corner-back for the Dallas Cowboys, was arrested and charged with public intoxication in the early hours of Saturday, according to a local news station in Dallas, Texas.
The details of the arrest have not been made public but it is confirmed that McCann was taken to a detoxification center in the city of Dallas at around 3:00 AM and released from the center some eight hours later. McCann denied the entire incident in a statement
released by his agent on Sunday.
"To my family, friends, coaches, teammates, and all Dallas Cowboy & SMU fans," the statement begins. "My good name and reputation mean everything to me. I have never been arrested before and take pride in conducting myself at all times in a responsible and
respectful manner off the football field. I was not intoxicated and did not pose a danger to myself or others."
McCann went on to add, "I am very grateful that, due to the Constitution and Americans' strong and enduring belief in due process, I am presumed innocent of this public intoxication charge because I am innocent. I look forward to vigorously defending myself
in a court of law. I thank you for your continued support."
After going undrafted in the 2010 National Football League (NFL) Draft, McCann was signed by the Cowboys. On September 5, of the same year, McCann was then claimed by the Baltimore Ravens but cut after one game, in which he did not play. He re-signed with
the Boys practice squad on September 16, 2010 before being moved onto the active roster less than two months later.
His first ever professional interception came just ten days after being activated, on November 14, 2010. That interception came off a pass by the New York Giants’ Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) Eli Manning which was intended for wide receiver Hakeem
Nicks. He made the interception in the end zone and returned it 101 yards for a touchdown. The interception broke the franchise record of longest interception return, previously held by Mike Gaechter, who returned an interception for 100 yards in 1962.
Just one week after the Cowboys’ win over the Giants, McCann returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown in a win over the Detroit Lions, earning him the Pepsi Rookie of the Week honors for Week 11 of the 2010 NFL regular season. McCann played in nine games
in the 2010 season, but started none of them. In total, he had 14 tackles, only one of which was assisted, defended one pass and returned one interception 101 yards for a touchdown.
In the 2010 preseason, McCann started one of the five games that he played in and had a total of 13 tackles, all of which were solo. He also defended one pass.
