Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins attends mandatory minicamp – NFL News
After remaining away from the team’s facility for most part of this offseason, nursing his shoulder injury back in Florida, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins eventually showed up for the mandatory three-day minicamp on Tuesday, June 12, 2012.
Jenkins did not participate in any organised team activity (OTA) this season owing to the shoulder injury that required him to go under the knife earlier this year.
Jenkins, who is in last year of his current contract, is also seeking long-term job security, which he might not receive from the team at the moment.
Cowboys signed cornerback Brandon Carr this offseason besides adding LSU’s cornerback Morris Claiborne during this year’s draft.
The arrival of both players has somewhat threatened Jenkins future with the team and the player also asked to be traded given he has not received any contract extension.
All these factors along with his injury prompted him not to attend OTAs, but he was supposed to attend the minicamp because failing to do so would have resulted in a hefty fine.
Jenkins has not yet recovered completely and according to different reports he might not be able to train properly before training camp.
However, he was seen doing some light jogging and exercise during the minicamp.
Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jason Garrett have repeatedly asserted that the team is not going to trade Jenkins, meaning he will be a part of the squad in the upcoming season in which Cowboys might come up with a new defensive strategy.
Garrett was happy to have Jenkins back for the minicamp. According to the details present on the team’s official website, he said:
“We’ve had conversations encouraging him to be here. We can’t demand any player to be here (for voluntary workouts). We made sure that his rehab situation was the right one when he wasn’t here and now it’s a mandatory situation. He’s back and he’s here.”
The head coach also said that Jenkins will be trained in the best possible manner before he is able to join his other teammates after rehabbing. He said:
“We don’t see it as a big deal. He would not be able to practice anyway. We’re going to try to coach him as best he can right now in the rehab stage of his development and certainly when he gets back on the field.”
