Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins’ participation against New York Giants in jeopardy – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys injured cornerback Mike Jenkins might not be able to play in the 2012 regular season opener against New York Giants on September 05 as he is out of practice since a long time.
Jenkins has been nursed his shoulder injury since the start of the offseason. The injury made him limited during the training sessions and he is yet to step on the field as the Cowboys continue with their preseason games.
The cornerback has not yet received clearance from his doctor, meaning he still cannot participate in practice sessions. In such a case it will be risky for the Cowboys to select him for the game against Giants provided he receives clearance from the doctor.
Jenkins is due to visit the doctor a couple of days before the game and the player has hoped to return to the field after that visit. Assuming that the doctor gives him clearance, the fact cannot be ignored that Jenkins has been out of touch since a long time and he will need time to get in proper rhythm.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has also underscored the importance of practice and training. Although the head coach has not placed any restrictions on Jenkins, he is of the view that it will be better for the cornerback and his teammates if he joins them fully fit and in rhythm.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett said of Jenkins:
“He needs to be able to practice football before he plays in Game One. We don’t have these hard and fast rules, if he doesn’t practice by this minute of this day, he can’t play in the game. That is not the way we do it.”
That noted, the head coach added:
“(But) we value practice. We value getting our guys ready to play. So, we understand the challenge he has coming back, having missed all the offseason and all of training camp, and we will treat his circumstance very individual and very specifically. But we believe in practice.”
Garrett continued:
“We wouldn’t put him out there unless he was ready.”
By the looks of the things, Jenkins might not be able to play against Giants. However, he must hope for early recovery so as to participate in as many games as possible.
