Dallas Cowboys CB Mike Jenkins still uncertain for season opener against New York Giants – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins is still uncertain about playing in the regular season opener against New York Giants on September 05, though he was present in Sunday’s practice sessions as a limited participant.
It was the first time this offseason that the cornerback stepped on the field and trained with his teammates as a shoulder injury had kept him out of the entire offseason activities.
Jenkins thinks that his shoulder is not going to cause any problem for him. According to the details present on the team’s website, he said:
“I don’t think nothing’s going to happen to it. It’s restructured. It’s not coming out. It’s a mental thing, as far as hitting. I may get a little pain in there, but that’s just football.”
Although Jenkins was given clearance to play earlier, the Cowboys did not include him in their Saturday’s practice. This was because he was feeling symptoms of migraines and the team decided against taking any risk.
The Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones had earlier said that the cornerback’s status for the game against Giants was unclear as he had not received the due practice during the offseason.
When Jenkins practiced on Sunday, Jones was clearly impressed with the efforts of the player, but he still did not give any confirmation about his participation in the regular season opener. Jones said:
“He clearly understood what he was dealing with yesterday, and the lingering effects of what he was dealing with yesterday had an impact today. But I was impressed with how he moved around in practice.”
Jenkins was surrounded by a bit of controversy throughout the offseason after the team drafted Morris Claiborne this year. The rookie’s addition increased the number of cornerbacks in the team and it was reported that Jenkins was not happy with the team’s
decision. However, Jenkins later denied to have been in any sort of argument with the team management.
As the Cowboys prepare for the season opener, it is unknown what will be Jenkins role in the line-up if he gets clearance from the team. Jenkins said of his chances:
“That’s coaches’ decision. I can’t make a decision on that. Just come in and do my part, whatever that may be.”
