Dallas Cowboys’ CB Morris Claiborne just a mere spectator in first rookie camp – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback, Morris Claiborne, who was among the highlights of the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, was unfortunate to attend the team’s first rookie minicamp on Friday, May 04, 2012, as just a spectator because he is not allowed
to take the field at the moment.
Claiborne was surprisingly selected by the Cowboys in first round of the draft as sixth overall pick. At present, he cannot participate in the team’s drills as he underwent a surgery to treat a wrist injury earlier this year and will require around a couple
of more weeks to get fit.
Claiborne is wearing a cast on his wrist and unless he gets it removed, the cornerback will continue watching the sessions from the sidelines without actively participating in them.
Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, who is present with the rookies on the field for the three-day minicamp, has also acknowledged that Claiborne cannot workout properly, but the head coach thinks that just being around the players will help him grow mentally
strong.
Garrett also advised the player to focus his energy on what he is capable of doing rather than worrying about what he can’t do.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett said of the cornerback:
"He can't really do anything from a movement standpoint until that cast comes off his wrist, but just being around the football team and how we try to do things, how we teach things technically and from a system standpoint, what the tempo practice is like
– I think all those things can help him.”
Claiborne also admitted that he was a bit dejected as he was unable to participate in the minicamp. However, he said that he was taking the mental reps.
He said:
"I don't want to be left behind. When it's really time for camp and everybody's here, I don't want to feel like I lost a step. I can't get out there and do it, but I was taking all the mental reps."
A day earlier, around 27 rookies including the draft picks and undrafted free agents who later joined the Cowboys, reported at the team’s facility for the minicamp.
The three-day minicamp will end on Sunday.
