Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones has ‘high’ confidence in quarterback Tony Romo – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys chief operating officer (COO) Stephen Jones has expressed complete faith in quarterback Tony Romo, saying that his confidence level in the player is high.
Cowboys’ recent defeat against New York Giants, in which Romo sent four interceptions, has drawn a lot of criticism to the player, but the team has continued to back him.
Against Giants in Week 8, Romo led the team’s comeback from 0-23 to 24-23, but the Cowboys still lost the game as Giants got a couple of field goals in the final quarter.
Romo has not won any Super Bowl ring in his career and it was expected that he would take the Cowboys back to their glorious winning period by winning the National Football League (NFL) title this season.
However, his performance has spoken otherwise. A sign of encouragement for Romo is that the management has consistently backed him. Earlier, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones uttered supporting words for the quarterback and now Stephen has come out to support the
player.
Stephen said on Thursday, via NFL.com:
"We have a lot of confidence in Tony.”
Speaking of the recent defeat against Giants, Stephen said:
“That game is a perfect example. There's a lot of quarterbacks that would've had a hard time rallying from that type of adversity. Gotta give him a lot of credit.”
Stephen also hoped that Romo would get better in the next games and said:
“There's a lot of quarterbacks that it doesn't happen right away for them in terms of winning championships and that type of thing. You don't have to look any further than the Hall of Famers, (John) Elway and (Brett) Favre. The (championships) came late
in their careers. They had some of the same issues that Tony's had.”
It is certainly encouraging for Romo to have received backing from the team management, but the fact cannot be ignored that he has thrown the highest number of interceptions this season in just seven games.
Also, Cowboys have only won three games while losing four and are far behind National Football Conference (NFC) East leaders Giants. Romo must live up to the expectations in order to justify the team’s faith in him.
