Dallas Cowboys DC Rob Ryan admits his mistake – NFL News
The Dallas Cowboys were doing reasonably well during the last National Football League (NFL) but they surprisingly began slumping towards the end and missed the opportunity to play in the postseason.
Many excuses have been given for the team’s loss since it was eliminated, but defensive coordinator Rob Ryan thinks that it was his mistake not to properly train the defence that led to the team’s failure.
Ryan might have been right as it was not easy to catch the 3-4 defensive scheme he had introduced soon after taking the responsibilities as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator.
He was unable to properly spend time with the players as there was no offseason last year due to the NFL lockout.
The team was unable to absorb the new scheme during the preseason games and the loopholes were evident during the team’s performance in the regular season.
This time around, however, Ryan has enough time to prepare his defence and the defensive coordinator believes that the team will play better in the 2012 season.
Ryan told the Associated Press:
"It wasn't all schematic-related. The parts where I take the blame for was when there's confusion on the defense, and a lot of that was us not getting on the same page, even in training camp."
He added:
"You want to be best right off the bat, and you want to be multiple, that's what I like to do. I think I'm smart, and I know I am, but unfortunately I probably put a little too much in too early."
Cowboys won and lost eight games respectively last year and fell one game short of the New York Giants who won nine games and qualified for the playoffs after topping the National Football Conference (NFC) East division and later won the Super Bowl.
Cowboys lost their regular-season finale against the Giants and were eliminated. Victory in that game could have led them to the playoffs.
The Cowboys are going to play the opening game of the 2012 season against Giants and they are hopeful of taking revenge. It will be seen only on the field if the defence has learned Ryan’s scheme or not.
Regarding preparing his defence this time here is what Ryan has to say:
"We're not throwing the entire playbook at these guys. We're taking slower steps.”
