Dallas Cowboys Gerald Sensabaugh wants to try free agency – NFL news
Dallas Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh’s agent, Kevin Conner says that Sensabaugh is still willing to come back to the ‘Boys’ but also wants to test the waters of the free-agent market once a new Collective Bargaining Agreement is reached.
Conner wanted to convey this message at a time when ongoing discussions about a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Players Association have caused uncertainty about the status of a 2011 NFL season.
“Our main goal and objective for Gerald is to secure a long-term deal,” Conner said. “We are strategically preparing for that opportunity, both with Dallas and the free-agent market. We have contingency plans for both scenarios. Gerald fully understands
the nature of this side of the business.”
Sensabaugh came to the NFL with high hopes after a record-setting college career at the University of North Carolina. He was drafted 157th overall in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also set a National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) record at North Carolina after blocking three punts in a single game.
During the NFL Scouting Combine, Sensabaugh set a 46-inch vertical jump record that still stands today. He was one of the few players to start every game of their rookie season. He started as strong safety in the playoffs after a magnificent performance
on special teams when Pro Bowler Donovin Darius was injured. After Darius came back in 2006, Sensabaugh continued to play on special teams until halfway through the season when Darius was ruled out with a knee injury and he took his place as starter.
On 10 March, 2009, the Cowboys offered Sensabaugh a one-year deal which he accepted, feeling that it would create more leverage when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. That year, he started in 14 of the 16 games that he played in and recorded
the best season of his career. He had 71 combine tackles, 12 assists, two sacks, ten passes deflected and five interceptions returned for a total of 26 yards.
However, the labour situation has created uncertainty about his current status. Only when a new deal is reached will the fate of Sensabaugh and many other free agents be known.
