Dallas Cowboys Jason Witten thinks Tony Romo is an elite quarterback – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten thinks that his teammate Tony Romo is an “elite” quarterback.
During his visit to local Abilene Sports Facility on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, Witten praised Romo and said:
“Obviously, I think Tony Romo is an elite quarterback who gives you a chance to compete for a championship."
His statement has come during the time when the quarterback is severely criticised for not taking Dallas Cowboys to the playoffs or beyond to win the National Football Conference (NFC) championship or the Super Bowl.
Cowboys have failed to reach the playoffs many times with Romo in charge of their offence, but Witten thinks that blaming Romo for all the Cowboys woes is unfair. He said of Romo:
“He's a phenomenal, cool quarterback. He's an elite quarterback. But until we win the big game, the criticism is going to come. We understand that, and we have high expectations. Tony is a phenomenal player and a phenomenal player for
our team."
Romo has been a part of Cowboys for nearly a decade without winning any Super Bowl.
The quarterback was not the first choice of the team in his first three seasons, but he became the starter from the 2006 season.
In his first season, he covered 2,903 yards getting 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while receiving a quarterback rating of 95.1.
He finished his last season with superb numbers. He played all 16 games, completed 4,184 yards and got 31 touchdowns while throwing 10 interceptions. He got a 102.5 rating for that season.
On the other side, it was a totally different story for his team. Cowboys ended their season 8-8. This was in total contrast to Romo’s performance.
Romo has become a sort of whipping boy for fans who think that Cowboys need some kind of variation and flare which could give them some unique style different from Romo.
Cowboys coach has come forward many times for the support of Romo. He thinks that the continuing improvement in his performance every season shows the commitment of the player.
Witten and many of his teammates have also backed Romo. Witten says:
"That's part of playing that position. He's a great player. That's just the way it goes. I just hope the fans know what a good player he is.”
There is a desperate need of Romo showing his experience along with leadership qualities to put Cowboys through to the playoffs and even further in the upcoming season.
