Dallas Cowboys’ Mike Jenkins to miss OTAs, expecting a trade – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback, Mike Jenkins, will miss organised team activities (OTAs) scheduled to start from Tuesday, May 22, 2012, different reports citing credible sources have claimed.
Earlier, it was reported that the Cowboys were hoping to have him during the OTAs, but were unaware of the player’s plans.
At the moment, neither the team management nor the player has confirmed or denied this report.
Although it is not surprising to see players missing OTAs as it is not mandatory for them to attend the voluntary workout programmes, Jenkins’ case is slightly different.
The defenseman is into last year of his current contract with the team and the Cowboys have not spoken of giving a contract extension to the player.
Also, they gave a contract extension to cornerback, Orlando Scandrick, last year and it shows that they are not going to release him now.
Furthermore, they have signed former Kansas City Chiefs’ defenseman, Brandon Carr, during this offseason besides selecting Louisiana State University’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne, in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft.
In presence on these three players, it was expected that the Cowboys might trade Jenkins to create room on the roster.
However, Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, recently denied the trade talks terming Jenkins a vital part of the team’s long-term plans.
Jones said:
"Jenkins is not only this year, but a long-term player here as far as I'm concerned,"
He added:
"I think we've got the resources to have three top corners, and (Orlando) Scandrick, which in my mind would be a fourth corner. That area of your money allocation just happens to be an area where if you plan right to get strong at corner and strong with
the pass rush, you're going to spend some money out there."
Despite receiving job security from the owner, Jenkins does not see himself as a part of the team in future.
Different reports suggest that Jenkins is going to miss the OTAs to imply that he is willing to be traded.
At the moment, Jenkins is rehabbing from a shoulder surgery and not allowed to take part in any kind of on-field workout.
It is not clear what the player’s next move will be, but it seems that if Cowboys do not give him contract extension both parties might have to part ways.
