Dallas Cowboys’ Stephen Jones wants to test young receivers – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ executive vice president, Stephen Jones, has said that he wants to test young wide receivers of the team before making a final call regarding adding a third receiver to the roster behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.
Cowboys have recently selected seven players during the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft. They only selected one receiver during the draft, but they also signed around 20 undrafted free agents who also include some receivers.
Jones also has an option to sign any receiver from the free agency market or acquire someone through a trade with any other team, but he is not up for utilising that option, not at this moment at least.
Jones was of the view that the young receivers should be given a chance to prove their worth and if someone deserves playing on the field as a Cowboy, he will get the opportunity.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Jones is in no hurry at the moment to select any receiver from outside and wants to make the move at the right time.
He said:
“For the most part, we’re patient right now. We feel comfortable. We’re not against adding somebody, but we kind of want to see how these young guys do. And if they don’t do the work or if it doesn’t pan out or if we’re not pleased, player acquisition is
365 days a year. I say that; I believe it.”
Jones also cited the case of Laurent Robinson, who has recently joined Jacksonville Jaguars after playing the last NFL season with the Cowboys, who selected the player in 2011.
Jones said that he wanted to wait and see the players’ performances during the minicamp and training sessions before reaching a decision. He also said that if he made the decision early he could lose the opportunity to sign any good player.
He commented:
“You never know when something’s going to come up and you get an opportunity to get a Laurent Robinson or somebody like that. We have to keep our eyes peeled and if the right guy comes up and he’s better than what we have, we’ll make a move.”
Cowboys are going to start their three-day minicamp for rookies on Friday.
