Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten avoids surgery, still uncertain about season opener – NFL News
Although Dallas Cowboys tight end has avoided a surgery to treat his spleen injury, there are no guarantees that he will be available for the regular season opener against the New York Giants on September 05.
The tight end received the injury in the first preseason game of this season. Although he got very limited time to spend on the field, he still could not avoid the injury. It was announced later that he would miss the entire preseason and nothing was said
about his participation in the regular season.
Earlier, it was assumed that the injury might require a surgery that could have forced Witten out for a long time.
Now the latest development suggests that the tight end does not need to undergo a surgery. It means that he could return to the squad during the regular season and will not have to spend the entire season on the sidelines.
However, there are uncertainties about his future and it is not known if he will be able to play the first quarter of the regular season, let alone the season opener.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Witten has said that he is recovering from the injury, but the player also admitted that he does not know about his return timeline. He said:
“It’s feeling a lot better than it was. Every day I feel better, but still there’s a lot of uncertainty out there for me. Again, I’ve just got to let it heal up, and I’m sure we’ll evaluate it next week and see where we’re at and go from there.”
Meanwhile, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has said that Witten will be evaluated next week again. Hoping for Witten’s early recovery, the head coach said:
“Hopefully we can get an OK from that. But this is all normal within the process of what we thought right from the outset. But everything has come back positive for him and we’re hopeful that he can return sooner rather than later.”
There is still more than a week left to the start of the season and if Witten gets clearance to play in his next evaluation he might make it to the squad against Giants. Otherwise, it will be too difficult for him to play in the season opener.
