Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten hopes to avoid surgery to repair spleen injury – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten has hoped to avoid surgery to treat his spleen injury that has forced him out from the entire preseason campaign, while his participation in the regular season opener early next month is still not guaranteed.
Witten sustained the injury during the Cowboys preseason game against Oakland Raiders on Monday despite getting very limited time on the field during the game. Cowboys managed to win that game.
According to Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, the injury is “very serious”. But Witten is still hopeful of avoiding surgery. Talking to reporters on Thursday, he said:
"Initially when they said we need to talk about it, I was a little worried of how long it could be. Obviously being hopeful to not having to have surgery, I thought sooner than later. That's a positive sign. Yeah, I was concerned, but ultimately we got good news from that standpoint."
Although no exact timeline is given for Witten’s recovery, the player has hoped to return for the regular season opener against the New York Giants. No official confirmation has yet been made about his participation in the game against Giants as it is too early for the management to decide if the player will be part of the squad.
In his nine-year career, Witten has played with consistency while maintaining his fitness. He has not missed many games and that is why this injury is bothering him as it could hurt his consistency.
However, there is nothing Witten can do about it. It is certainly a different experience for him, but he is hoping to get back on the field as soon as possible. He said:
"It's different. It's not something you can just fight through and dig deep. But it's hard. It's the first time for me to be in this situation. I'm staying optimistic and staying positive. We're all hopeful to get the results we're looking for.”
According to different reports, Witten’s injury has occurred after he reportedly received a hit from Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain. Initially, it did not bother him, but when he consulted the doctor the next day it was revealed that he had a spleen injury.
