Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten out with “serious injury” – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys veteran tight end Jason Witten has received a serious injury and might be out of the entire preseason campaign, head coach Jason Garrett has confirmed.
As per the details, Witten suffered an injury during their first preseason game against the Oakland Raiders on Monday, August 13. The abnormal injury is diagnosed as a lacerated spleen.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett said of the injury:
“It’s a very serious injury and we’re really taking this day-by-day. He has to be very still and idle for the next week to 10 days. You won’t see him out on the practice field. We have to make sure he heals as well as possible and as quickly as possible.”
Witten is not going to play the Cowboys’ second preseason game on Saturday, August 18, and the coach has also ruled him out of their third preseason game, to be played against St. Louis Rams on August 25.
Some reports have also suggested that the tight end might also miss the final preseason game to be played on August 29 against Miami Dolphins.
The Cowboys are in no hurry and might keep Witten out of the entire preseason as they want him fully fit for the regular season that is going to start from September 05 with a game against the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants.
In the game against Raiders, Witten only got two receptions and gained six yards. He is a nine-year veteran and an important part of the Cowboys’ offence.
In his absence, John Phillips is going to take charge at tight end, but he in no way can replace Witten. Even Phillips himself has acknowledged that it is not easy to fill the void created by Witten’s absence. While mentioning that he is not trying to replace
Witten, Phillips said of the veteran:
“He’ll be able to lead from the sidelines, be able to help us out in the film room and stuff, but I’m sure he’ll get his body right and do the things that he needs to do to get back and play on this team.”
Some reports have also suggested that Witten might also miss the preseason opener.
