Dallas Cowboys TE John Phillips hopes to become starter in the 2012 season – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys tight end John Phillips has not yet been able to become starter since joining the team in 2009, but the player is optimistic about the upcoming season and hopes to earn the starting role now.
Phillips has also been a bit unfortunate. In the 2009 season, which was his first, Phillips did not get enough playing time. In the 2010 season, he could have received relatively more playing time, but he sustained an injury during the preseason and was
forced out of the entire season.
Last year, his participation stayed limited, again. He played 16 games of the regular season while starting seven. In total, he caught 15 passes for 101 yards and scored one touchdown.
Since Martellus Bennett has joined New York Giants now after deserting Cowboys, the starting tight end position is open.
Although Cowboys do have a few options for the position, Phillips seems a good option as he has spent three seasons with the team.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, it is not confirmed if Phillips will be their starter in 2012, but the player seems hopeful. When asked about getting the starting role, he said:
"Well, I hope so. You have to prepare yourself to have a big year and get in that mindset. I hope it's going to be a big year for the whole squad. We're just in the early stages of it right now. But I've worked hard and I'm ready to take that next step.”
Phillips has also remained quite active during the offseason and attended all the voluntary activities.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is also impressed with the player’s energy. Appreciating Phillips’ workout activities, the head coach said:
“I'm just a team guy. I do whatever they tell me to do. Whether it's blocking or letting me run out and catch the ball in the flat. I'm going to do whatever I can do to help this team win.”
The Cowboys are going to start their training camp later this month and it is expected that Phillips’ role in the 2012 season will be determined during training camp after which the Cowboys will head to play preseason games.
