Dallas Cowboys WR Andre Holmes gaining confidence – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones had earlier expressed faith in young wide receiver Andre Holmes and the player’s performance in the preseason opener against the Oakland Raiders on Monday, August 13, 2012, certainly pleased the owner.
Holmes led the Cowboys’ receivers in terms of both, receptions and yards. He caught the ball three times and gained 40 yards, averaging 13.3 yards per reception.
Jones was really impressed with Holmes, saying that the player “really stood out” while Holmes himself has said that he was able to perform well because of having good practice sessions earlier.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Holmes said:
“I think I’ve been practicing a lot better here lately. I just basically told myself ‘you can catch the ball’ so I just stopped thinking so much and focused on making plays and letting it come natural to me. I think I was pressing when I first got back.”
Cowboys have not decided who their third receiver will be in the regular season and Holmes is fast emerging as an ideal candidate for the role.
Cowboys did not go to the free agency or trade option to select any receiver, and trusted the talent already present on their roster. They made it clear that they would give opportunities to young receivers to exhibit their talent.
Earlier, Jones had also confirmed that the Cowboys would give more playing time to Holmes, implying that he could become the third receiver.
However, the Cowboys have not yet decided anything. Holmes must refrain from complacency after leading the receivers in one game and instead focus on repeating the good performance in the next preseason games.
If Holmes plays well, he will certainly get more playing time in the regular season. Holmes is also looking forward to having an opportunity of representing the Cowboys during the regular season. He said:
“I’m a big guy and I know they want me to go up and get the ball. That’s one of the reasons I’m here and I think it’s something I’ve got to do more of – go get the ball when they put it up for me. So hopefully I’ll get more opportunities to do that.”
