Dallas Cowboys aiming to strengthen the defensive unit – NFL News
While expressing displeasure over the performance of Dallas Cowboys’ defensive unit, the franchise’s executive vice president, Stephen Jones, has stressed on the need of improving the defence.
Jones, who is attending the National Football League (NFL) Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, also indicated that the time might pick up some players to strength the defensive unit in the upcoming drafts.
He said:
“Obviously, we are not pleased with where we are on defence. I don’t know that we’ve got good enough talent to win over there. We have to improve it.”
He also took the responsibility for the team’s failure and said:
“People say every year they got good players. They got a helluva team.”
He added:
“We are hiring people who are respected. We haven’t gotten over the hump so in that respect we deserve all the criticism we get."
The debacle Cowboys faced during the past NFL season is not hidden from anyone.
Cowboys were a part of the threatening National Football Conference (NFC) East division in which the presence of Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants left no room for errors.
However, the season witnessed mediocre performances from almost all the teams in the division and the competitive nature of all the teams might be the reason behind this.
At one stage, it was looking as if the Cowboys would qualify for the playoffs by topping the division, but things went the other way round.
Cowboys lost four of their last five games of the regular season and paved the way for New York Giants, who not only reached the postseason, but went farther to win the Super Bowl.
In all the defeats that came towards the end of the season, the defence was miserable.
Now, the primary focus for the Cowboys is to improve the defensive unit. It will start during the offseason when the players would work out to improve their skills.
The second option, which the Cowboys are expected to avail, is the utilisation of drafts and free agency.
During the next couple of months, a lot of players will either enter the league for the first time or become available in the market after parting ways with their present teams.
Jones has not yet clearly mentioned anything about Cowboys’ plans regarding the drafts and the free agents, but his statements certainly indicate where the franchise is heading.
