Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Kyle Orton waiting for the right opportunity – NFL News
When the Dallas Cowboys signed quarterback Kyle Orton to serve as Tony Romo’s backup, the player accepted the role gladly. But that does not mean that Orton is not ambitious.
While acknowledging his role as a backup, Orton has not ruled out the possibility of becoming a starter saying that a lot of football is still left in him.
Orton, who started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2005 with Chicago Bears, also played for Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs before joining Cowboys.
With Cowboys, there is no chance for Orton to become the starter as long as Romo is fit and healthy. However, he just wants to be a part of the team by playing his role efficiently at the moment while waiting for an opportunity of getting the starting role.
He said:
"I feel like I've played good ball in this league, I feel I've got a lot of good ball left in me. I don't see this as committing myself to be the backup. I'm just committing myself to be a part of the team."
That being said, Orton also acknowledged Romo’s stature saying that he could learn a lot from the Cowboys star who performed brilliantly during the last season but unfortunately could not take the team to the playoffs.
Orton said of Romo:
“He's played great football. He's a great quarterback. So I'm excited. It's really the first time I've been around another veteran in my career.”
Meanwhile, Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, has also appreciated Orton’s skills as a quarterback saying that he is capable of playing as a starter.
Garrett mentioned that Orton had played as starter as well as at backup during his career and maintained that he should not face any problem accepting any role with his new team.
While defending the selection of Orton, who did not consider any other team before agreeing to deal terms with Cowboys, Garrett said that the management is satisfied with the acquisition. The head coach said:
"We just felt like it was a really good acquisition for us, and everything we've seen over the course of the first nine OTAs makes us excited."
