Dallas Cowboys bring Bill Callahan and Jerome Henderson to the franchise—NFL Update
Dallas Cowboys announced the appointment of Bill Callahan and Jerome Henderson as the franchise’s offensive line and secondary coach on Thursday, January 12, 2012.
Callahan, who served as an offensive line and assistant head coach for the New York Jets before coming to Dallas, will also serve as offensive coordinator for the Cowboys.
He has replaced recently-retired coach, Hudson Houck.
Callahan’s appointment is seemingly a welcoming development for the Cowboys, who failed most of the times during the regular season of the National Football League (NFL) to accelerate or build on the momentum after starting well.
Cowboys were also bothered by the play calling of their coach, Jason Garrett, whose poor time management also cost them a game.
Now with Callahan in the camp, Garrett might get the much needed support and could focus more on other aspects of development, leaving the play calling to the newly appointed offensive coordinator.
Meanwhile, Henderson, who has been appointed as secondary coach, will provide assistance to defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan.
Henderson was serving the Cleveland Browns as a secondary coach for the last three years.
Dallas did not maintain a commendable record this season in terms of defence as they surrendered early leads and gave away plenty of scoring opportunities to the opponents.
Henderson’s addition in the coaching staff is expected to improve the defence’s performance overall.
"I think he is going to be a really nice coach for us", Cowboys’ executive vice president, Stephen Jones, said about Henderson.
"Fans, anybody could see that we have struggled, in particular on the back end of our defence. We have to improve ourselves. That makes it two years running now we have struggled. We have to get better back there".
Recent developments have come under the light due to the failure this season, as the Cowboys were supposed to lead the National Football Conference (NFC) – East division and enter the playoffs.
However, their slump, late in the season, allowed division rivals, New York Giants, to get an edge over them and enter the postseason.
The appointment of new coaching staff is certainly a step forward, but the selection will be justified when the players step on the field and show what has changed.
