Dallas Cowboys' coach Wade Phillips remains in the hot seat
Just last week, Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones insisted that his team’s head coach would not have to worry about finding employment elsewhere until (at least) the end of the season. But after yet another embarrassing loss, Wade Phillips’ job security
seems to be in limbo more than ever before.
The head coach has been under fire recently, considering the team’s 1-7 record. And, although they were widely considered to be pre-season favourites for this year’s Super Bowl (which will coincidentally be hosted at Cowboys Stadium), the team has been stifled
by injuries this season.
Their most recent setback came two weeks ago when they lost Tony Romo to a broken left clavicle, sidelining the starting quarterback for six to eight weeks.
Jones, who serves as both the franchise’s owner and general manager, is expected to meet with a number of coaches on Monday afternoon to review Sunday night’s defeat, a 45-7 dismantling at the hands of the Green Bay Packers. After the game, Jones was understandably
upset with the way his team has underperformed thus far this year.
"There are a lot of people here who are certainly going to suffer and suffer consequences," the embattled owner said during a post-game press conference.
"I’m talking about within the team, players, coaches, who have got careers. This is certainly a setback. I know first-hand what it is to have high expectations."
After Sunday’s devastating performance against the Packers, neither Jones nor Phillips would comment on the head coach’s job status. Nonetheless, it’s apparent that the players believe in their head coach and fully support him, despite their record.
"Wade is going to keep fighting. We’re not going to lose him," said linebacker Keith Brooking. "I have so much respect for Wade, the man, [and] that he is the coach, the success that he’s had in this league. In saying that, it’s none of my business as far as
what Mr. Jones is thinking and the decisions he's going to make. I fully support Wade. I believe in him and he’s our head coach and that’s the only way you can look it."
The Cowboys are expected to host a press conference featuring Phillips on Monday, 8 November, at 4 p.m. Central Standard Time.
