Dallas Cowboys express interest in Alabama’s linebacker Courtney Upshaw – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ chief operating officer and director of player personnel, Stephen Jones, has said that the team management is going to seriously consider performance of Alabama’s linebacker, Courtney Upshaw, who could be a pick for the Cowboys in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) drafts.
In an interview when Jones was asked to present his opinion about cornerback, Dre Kirkpatrick, safety, Mark Barron, and linebacker, Courtney Upshaw; all the players belong to the University of Alabama, he appreciated each one of the player, but put special emphasis on Upshaw’s performance.
Here is what Jones said of the three players.
He said of Kirkpatrick:
“Kirkpatrick is a really long corner. He has great length. He has a lot of productivity there at Alabama, one of the top corners in the draft.”
He said of Barron:
[He] is a tremendous leader on that defence. I think he was one of the top guys the rest of the defence looked to.”
He said of Upshaw:
"He's a guy we're really going to have to take a long, hard look at over the next couple of weeks to see is he a (strong-side) linebacker for us, what is his more natural position or is he more of a defensive end.”
The Cowboys have 14th pick in the first round of the drafts and it is expected that the management will add a member in its defensive squad.
The Cowboys are renowned for investing a lot of money is hiring talented players, but the team is still unable to display miracles during the season.
Even the last season was not impressive as in spite of gaining an edge over other teams of the National Football Conference (NFC) East Division, the Cowboys collapsed towards the end of the regular season and did not qualify for the playoffs.
When asked about the criticism Cowboys generally face when it comes to drafting players, Jones asserted that an informed decision based on the evaluation and future prospects is made while hiring college players.
He also said that every player has a potential of playing well, but added that it cannot be determined if the draft selection was good or not until the player spends five or six years in the league.
The drafts will start from April 26 and will end of April 28.
