Dallas Cowboys focusing on strengthening defence during the 2012 draft – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys is one of those National Football League (NFL) franchises that spend plenty of money to acquire ‘game winners’ but fail to formulate a winning unit.
With the 2012 NFL draft just around the corner, Cowboys are once again hoping to select fresh talent, who would take them to glory.
During the free agency, Cowboys hired some players to strengthen their offensive line-up and now they are shifting focus on defence for the draft.
Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, has said that the team might draft a few players, who would add strength to the team’s defensive squad.
While acknowledging the fact that the management has addressed the need of the offensive unit, Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, said that the issues of the defence will be addressed in the draft.
Jones said:
"It would look like there is going to be potentially top defensive players there. We have to take into consideration that we've done pretty well in free agency relative to our offensive line. ... So you're not off base to say likely it will be a defensive
player."
Earlier, Cowboys’ chief operating officer and director of player personnel, Stephen Jones, also highlighted the need of adding more players to the defensive unit and said that the management was seriously considering hiring defensive players from the University
of Alabama’s football team.
Stephen also monitored game of Alabama’s cornerback, Dre Kirkpatrick, safety, Mark Barron, and linebacker, Courtney Upshaw.
He asserted the need of drafting those players who have been coached well in their respective colleges. Stephen said:
“One of the things we’ve looked at over the years is that when you draft players from top colleges, the people who are going to have success are players who have been coached well. They tend to play well in the NFL. It’s not a blanket statement, but they
seem to have that.”
In the last NFL season, Cowboys finished with winning and losing eight games respectively and could not qualify for the playoffs from the National Football Conference (NFC) East division. Their record gave them 14th first-round pick for the draft,
which will start on Thursday, April 26 and end on Saturday, April 28.
