Dallas Cowboys guard Mackenzy Bernadeau still rehabbing, starting spot open – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys guard Mackenzy Bernadeau who has joined the team this offseason is yet to take part in any of the team’s activities owing to a hip surgery, which has now somewhat jeopardised his starting role with the team.
The Cowboys had brought him in with the intentions of playing him as the starter in the 2012 season, but since the player is yet to get fit and participate in any team activity his chances are fast fading.
Also, the Cowboys have a couple of players who could fill Bernadeau’s position.
David Arkin, who was selected in fourth round of the 2011 draft and Ronald Leary, who has joined the team this season as an undrafted free agent, are capable of playing at guard.
Furthermore, both of them have attended the offseason activities, taking an edge over Bernadeau.
On the flip side, Bernadeau is more experienced than the two. Before joining the Cowboys, he played four seasons for Carolina Panthers after starting his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2008.
This is something that has also impressed Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. The coach thinks that Bernadeau’s experience is going to help, but he has refrained from confirming who will get the starting role.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Garrett said:
"I would think it is. He's been around a couple systems in Carolina. He's a smart guy, but having said that, he's missed some time that's valuable to him. ... We just have to see where he fits in there."
Meanwhile, Bernadeau has also hoped that he will recover soon. According to earlier reports, the player might miss training camp in July and might also not be available for some preseason games.
However, he has not provided any update on his recovery timeline. He said:
"I'm here for a reason. I think it's to contribute and play to the best of my ability and help the team whichever way I can. ... I'm more than willing to play whatever there is. I'm just excited to help contribute and get on the field, hopefully sooner than
later."
It cannot be said with absolute authority who will start the 2012 season at guard, but Bernadeau still has some chances to become the starter.
