Dallas Cowboys have got the talent, but not the leader: defensive end, Jason Hatcher – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ defensive end, Jason Hatcher, has said that the team has got all the talent it needs, but regretted that there is a serious void of leadership in the locker room.
In a radio interview on Friday, February 17, 2012, Hatcher gave an astonishing reply when asked who was the team leader according to him.
The listeners expected him to take the name of Tony Romo, Jason Witten or any other player, who is vocal and remains actively involved in pep-talks during the team meetings.
However, that was not the case and his surprising answer gave a birth to many other serious questions.
Here is what Hatcher said when the question was put forward:
“Dude. I gotta be honest with you . . . That's a good question. That's a good question.”
While stressing the need of having at least one person who could take the leadership role in the team, Hatcher cited the example of Baltimore Ravens’ linebacker, Ray Lewis, and said that the Cowboys need a player like Lewis.
He said:
“I really don't know. It's just another thing we really need...like the Ravens, we don't have that.”
He added:
“We've got the talent. We've got everything we need. I think we get like a Ray Lewis like, everybody buy into him. When Ray Lewis speaks, everybody listens to him. A guy like that. We really don't got that. I think we definitely need somebody like that."
Hatcher was of the view that the presence of a leader is crucial for any team as the players feel accountable in front of the man in charge.
He also said that the Cowboys will be a different unit if someone takes the responsibility of being the team leader.
“So once you have that, you'll be good. We're still looking for it."
During the regular season of the National Football League (NFL), Cowboys had a very bright chance of reaching the playoffs, but their inconsistency hampered the progress.
A number of times, the Cowboys took the lead in the National Football Conference (NFC) East division, but they just could not maintain it.
In the end, New York Giants finished just a game ahead of Cowboys and qualified for the postseason and won the Super Bowl XLVI later.
It has been around 15 years since the Cowboys won the Super Bowl and now it can be assumed that the leadership void might be the reason behind this failure.
