Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, making plans for free agency – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, is hopeful for resolving the team’s main issues during the free agency market, which will open next week.
Garrett has been working closely with scouts and other coaching personnel regarding bringing changes in the line-up and this is an ideal opportunity for him to achieve his targets.
The Cowboys played well during the National Football League (NFL) season, but slumped towards the end of the regular season.
As a result, they fell one game behind the National Football Conference (NFC) East division leaders, New York Giants, and failed to reach the playoffs.
Now Garrett is up for exploring options in the free agency market as is also very positive about the upcoming NFL drafts in April.
He has also expressed pleasure over the fact that drafts are scheduled after the free agency market.
He said:
“It's different from the standpoint that free agency is prior to the draft like it usually is and we do have a little more salary cap space than in previous years. Hopefully we can address some of the issues we feel like we have on our team with some players
we feel are attractive, and then we can go into the draft and draft as purely as possible."
Last year, Cowboys spent most of their time re-signing their players and deal with the expiring contracts of many. Since they were well over their salary cap, they were not able to draft more players or hire talented players from the free agency market.
This year, however, the scenario is much more different and Cowboys have controlled their expenses, making room to hire new players.
While citing last year’s example, Garrett said of this situation:
"We've been in some situations where we haven't had that much salary cap space and we've kind of had to be creative in dealing with the salary cap situation that we had.”
Meanwhile, different reports have suggested that Cowboys are not going to pursue Peyton Manning, who has recently been released by Indianapolis Colts.
Cowboys have earlier expressed total faith in their regular quarterback, Tony Romo, and seem to be in no hurry of hiring a quarterback from the free agency or during the drafts.
