Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, voices his concerns over bounty system – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, has also voiced his concerns regarding the ‘pay for performance’ system that encourages the players to hit and injure opponents and receive bounty for their actions.
Garrett strongly opposed the idea of deliberately hitting opponents and said that players’ safety should be the first priority for every team.
He also said that Cowboys strictly follow the procedures of the National Football League (NFL) are not involved in any four practice. Garrett said:
"I think we all have a real focus on player safety and I think everyone understands that. The league has done a really good job of that. We try to do that within our team, so that has not been an issue for us. The league will probably come down with some
recommendations as to what we're supposed to say to our team like they've done in similar situations in the past."
Garrett is prompted to share his opinions on the matter following an NFL investigation that revealed the malpractice New Orleans Saints promoted during the last three years.
The investigation mainly revolved around Saints’ then defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who, with consent of the general manger and head coach, enticed the player to hit the opponents.
In return, Williams offered them monetary rewards.
While this development has brought Williams under the line of fire, several current and former players and officials have also stepped up to share their views on this matter.
The practice of awarding little perks is not uncommon in the league, but an attempt to deliberately injure opponents is totally uncalled for. However, certain players have also supported this action.
While condemning this malpractice, Garrett said that nothing like that ever happened in his team.
He said:
"I think probably most teams around the league will talk to their teams about that, just because of what happened. It's never really been an issue for our team -- that's not something we have done.”
Williams, who is presently the defensive coordinator of St. Louis Rams, might face suspension from the league.
Although he has apologised for his actions, the lead might punish him to set an example for other teams.
