Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett: Phil Costa faces competition – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, has said that offensive guard, Phil Costa, who played and started all games in the last National Football League (NFL) season, will have to compete hard to get earn the role in the upcoming season.
Garrett was speaking with specific reference to the presence of young players in the squad who could easily replace Costa at the starting position.
Cowboys selected Costa after the 2010 NFL draft in which the player was unable to attract interest from any team of the league.
After joining the team, Costa had to work really hard to prove that he could be trusted with the starting role.
Although he did not get enough playing time in his rookie season as he only started one game while playing four, Costa was given the starting role in his second season.
His performance was satisfactory and he constantly improved his game throughout the season, but that still did not guarantee a starting role for the player for the 2012 season.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Garrett said of Costa:
"He certainly faces competition. We have a lot of guys, some young guys, who we like there."
That being said, Garrett did not rule out the possibility that Costa could be the starter once again.
If Costa is able to satisfy the coaches with his performance during the organised team activities (OTAs) and training camp next month, he might be given more playing time during preseason games and if he keeps on performing well, he could once again be the
starter.
Garrett appreciated the player’s talent while admitting that the player who works hard would earn the starting role.
The head coach said:
"He's another one of those guys who came in to last season and earned that position ... an undersized guy, too this, too that, too much the other thing. But he just said 'Hey, I'm a good football player,' and he tried to show us that every day.”
Garrett added:
“He's a serious-minded kid, he works hard, he's tough. I think he's an underappreciated athlete. We're seeing that more and more now, and I just think the experience of playing will help him.”
