Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett accepts blame for loss against Baltimore Ravens – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has taken the blame for his team’s defeat against Baltimore Ravens in Week 6 game, admitting that he was unable to manage time properly at the end of the game.
After initial slump against Ravens, Cowboys rallied strongly to increase their winning chances. In the final quarter, with less than one minute left, Cowboys scored a touchdown, reducing Ravens’ lead to just two points.
When there were 20 odd seconds left on the clock, Cowboys did not call a timeout immediately and instead wasted some time before making that call.
Upon Cowboys’ return to field after the timeout, the task was to be finished by kicker Dan Bailey who had to score from 51 yards.
Unfortunately, the kicker missed the attempt and the Cowboys lost the game.
Garrett’s decision to call the timeout late has been in debate since the defeat and now he has admitted that if the team had gained some yards instead of wasting time, Bailey would have much shorter distance to cover for the field goal.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett took the complete blame for not managing the clock properly, something he had also done in the last season.
The head coach said:
“When we look at that situation, the evaluation is that we need to do a better job in that situation. That starts with me, just executing and getting more out of that situation. If you look at where we are on the field, how many timeouts we have left and
what we’re trying to get accomplished … we understood we were in field goal range at that time.”
The head coach said that the team assumed that Bailey would kick the ball successfully. Garrett added:
“The plan was in place prior to that whole sequence, knowing that we had 26 seconds – this was after the interference – and one timeout.”
Even though Garrett has accepted his mistake, it does not justify the loss, and certainly not bodes well to the Cowboys’ hopes of reaching the playoffs this season. They are currently ranked behind all the teams in National Football Conference (NFC) East.
