Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett asserts need of takeaways – NFL News
After six weeks of the 2012 season, Dallas Cowboys are leading the defensive chart as far as limiting opponents’ passing yards is concerned. However, their secondary has not been able to perform well so far and it has struggled in making interceptions and taking the ball away from opponents.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has appreciated the defence for controlling the passing game of their opponents so well, but he has urged the secondary to step and stage some takeaways and interceptions.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett said:
“We think it’s very good that we haven’t given up a lot of passing yards. We made a huge emphasis on that with our football team, in the personnel decisions we made in the offseason, as you know, and we think that’s good.”
Garrett added:
“As a defence, we need to create more takeaways, and that’s knocking the ball out, sack fumbles, intercepting passes. We need to do more of that and we’ll continue to focus on that.”
The Cowboys head coach also said that only one department is not to be blamed for not staging interceptions and takeaways. Instead, Garrett believes that the entire defence is responsible for forcing opponents to throw any interception and lose the ball.
He said:
“We believe that takeaways and turnovers are team things. The guys up front, the linebacker level, all of that stuff impacts the potential for an interception.”
It is important for Cowboys to get better at all levels because even by leading the defensive chart they are not yet able to climb up in their division standings.
Out of the five games Cowboys have played this season, three were lost. They are currently placed behind New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins, at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) East.
This shows that Cowboys must perform equally well at all levels if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive. They still have 11 more games to play in the season, and securing a playoff berth will not be difficult for them if the defence on the whole performs well, while the offence provides the due support.
