Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett rubbishes Mike Jenkins’ trade rumours – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, has rubbished the speculations regarding cornerback, Mike Jenkins’ trade, saying that the player is a part of the team’s long-term plan.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Jenkins is not attending organised team activities (OTAs) at the moment.
Different reports suggest that Jenkins, who is entering the last year of his current contract with the team, is expecting to be traded and that’s why he is not participating in OTAs.
Jenkins is also recovering from a shoulder injury and will not be able to attend workouts, but the team management still wants him to be present with all other players and attend the team meetings, at least.
Garrett said:
"Mike Jenkins, we believe, is a big part of our football team right now. He's making a business decision not to be here, but we're not going to trade him. We like Mike Jenkins, we feel like he can be a part of our team. We've got to get him healthy. We've
got to get him back and get him going."
Jenkins’ trade reports started surfacing after the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft in which the Cowboys had selected LSU’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne.
Recently, the team also added former Kansas City Chiefs’ cornerback, Brandon Carr, to the roster and they also have Orlando Scandrick on the roster with a long-term job security.
According to different reports, Jenkins himself wants to get traded because he thinks that in presence of these three players, his place on the roster is threatened.
On the other hand, Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, and now Garrett have said that they see Jenkins as a part of the team’s long-term plan.
However, no talks around the contract extension of Jenkins have surfaced yet.
As Jenkins continues missing OTAs, Cowboys’ defensive backs coach, Jerome Henderson, is of the view that the player is missing a lot by not attending OTAs.
He said:
"He's missing out on a lot. There is no way to talk around that. We would love to have him here, but he's going and working through this one his own. Once we get him back, we'll coach him up and get him ready to go.”
