Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett up for giving opportunities to Dez Bryant – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett’s decision to play wide receiver Dez Bryant in the game against Carolina Panthers received mix response with some people backing that move while others holding different opinions.
The reason behind people thinking that playing Bryant as a punt returner was not a very commendable move is that the player, they argue, does not secure the ball properly and instead focus more on generating plays.
As a punt returner it should be the prime responsibility of any player to secure the ball first and then focus on running and gaining as much yards as possible.
Against Panthers, Bryant returned three punts for a total of 17 yards. While playing as a receiver in the same game, Bryant gained 14 yards on two catches.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Garrett has admitted that the player must focus on securing the ball, but the Cowboys head coach believes that the player has a lot of talent and that he must be given opportunities to prove his potential.
Garrett said:
“For a guy like that, you keep wanting to give him opportunities, but he’s got to make sure he secures it better.”
The head coach added:
“We’ve all been around a lot of really elite players who can make a lot of plays, and you never want to take that ability away from them. You want to give them opportunities to do that, because they can make difference-making plays in the game that other
guys can’t make, so you want them to be aggressive that way. But at the same time, you have to understand the balance.”
Cowboys (3-3) are going to play their next game on home against defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants. They have not yet confirmed Bryant’s role for that game. The player could once again be used as punt returner, but this time Garrett has to pay
extra attention on the player while he practises his punt return game.
Giants are in prime form and already leading NFC East. Cowboys are behind in the division and this game is an opportunity for them to secure lead in the division.
