Dallas Cowboys hire Matt Eberflus as linebackers coach
Now that the Cleveland Browns have their own linebackers coach, Matt Eberflus won’t feel so bad about going to the Dallas Cowboys to take up a similar position.
Eberflus was hired on Monday after holding the same job for two seasons with the Browns. Rob Ryan is defensive coordinator for the Cowboys but held the same position with the Browns earlier. So yes, Eberflus is following Ryan around like a shadow.
Before coming to the ‘Boys, Eberflus was the linebackers coach with the Browns since February 2009. Going even further back, he was with the University of Missouri for eight years before joining the Browns. He spent the last three years there as the University
of Missouri Tigers’ defensive coordinator, safeties coach and assistant head coach.
He led the Tigers to the top of the Big 12 in 2007 in almost every single defensive category. He was twice named National Defensive Coordinator of the Week and two of his safeties were named National Defensive Players of the Week at Missouri.
The National Football Conference (NFC) East Cowboys’ Head Coach Jason Garrett now has two vacant spots left in his coaching staff, if he wishes to fill them. The ‘Boys still need a wide receivers coach for the offence and a defensive line coach for the defence.
He has hired his brother, John Garrett, as the tight ends and passing game coordinator and has Wade Wilson as quarterbacks coach. John Garrett had been a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals before becoming a scout for the Cowboys.
Wilson had been quarterback for various teams in his 17-year career and has been quarterbacks coach from 2000. The Cowboys also have Skip Peete as running backs coach and Dave Campo as secondary coach. Peete had spent nine seasons with the Oakland Raiders
as their running backs coach before coming over to the ‘Boys.
Meanwhile, Campo had been head coach for the Cowboys from 2000 to 2002 before being fired, and subsequently took up the defensive coordinator position in Cleveland. The team also has Brett Maxie as their secondary and safeties coach with Joe DeCamillis as
their special teams’ coordinator. Maxie had been defensive back for 13 years in the National Football League (NFL) for various teams.
He was named assistant defensive coach to the ‘Boys in February 2008. DeCamillis had been special teams coach since 1988, when he was with the Denver Broncos. Since leaving the Broncos, the Cowboys will be the fourth team to be graced by DeCamillis’ presence.
