Dallas Cowboys’ linebacker, Anthony Spencer, needs long-term job security – NFL News Update
In the National Football League (NFL), as long as money is rolling in for any player, he seems satisfied and sometimes overjoyed, but when it is not, the darker side of the picture shows up.
It is a sorry tale, but it can’t be denied that the lives of many are dependent on what is just a sport for millions of fans. Players get selfish as they have their families to look after.
Dallas Cowboys’ linebacker, Anthony Spencer, is going through one of the difficult phases a football player could face.
Spencer, the first-round pick of the 2007 NFL drafts, had earlier indicated that the recently concluded NFL season might be his last with the Cowboys.
His five-year contract has ended after the recently concluded season and he will now be an unrestricted free agent next month.
However, the Cowboys can extend his contract or give the player their franchise tag, which would keep Spencer for one more year with Cowboys.
But Spencer might not be happy getting under the franchise tag because it would restrict him from joining any other team, which could offer him a long contract of three, four or more years.
He said that he would love to be with the Cowboys, but he needs a good contract extension. Otherwise, it will be time for Spencer to move on.
He said:
"I'm just waiting around, pretty much just waiting for something to happen. Of course I want the long-term security ... I would want to have something done. But if it doesn't happen, what can I do about it? I'm excited for the opportunity that I'm in right
now, just to be a free agent, to have the Cowboys want me back and have the opportunity to be other places at the same time."
The team management is still pondering over its options and has not reached any decision yet.
When asked about what his reaction would be if the Cowboys decided to franchise him, Spencer did not have a proper answer.
He said that he would talk to his agent about the offer and asserted that his primary goal is to be playing on the field.
Spencer said:
“I want to play, regardless, so I'm going to try to be on the field or be somewhere playing. That's going to be my No. 1 objective."
Spencer started 15 games in the regular season while playing all the 16 in which he recorded a total of 66 tackles and 6.0 sacks.
If he gets the contract extension, the expectations from him would certainly be high in the next season.
