Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones: Mike Jenkins is a long-term player here – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, has rubbished the speculations around possible trade of cornerback, Mike Jenkins, saying that he is a long-term player here.
Soon after the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft in which Cowboys surprisingly selected Louisiana State University’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne, it was widely rumoured that the team would trade Jenkins to create space on the roster.
However, Jones denied all those rumours and said on Wednesday, May 09, 2012, at the annual Cowboys Golf Classic that Jenkins would stay in Dallas for a long period of time.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, he said of the player:
"[Jenkins is] a vital part of our plan ... a very critical role in what we want to be defensively."
He added:
"Jenkins is not only this year, but a long-term player here as far as I'm concerned,"
Jenkins joined the Cowboys in 2008. In his rookie season, he did not get enough playing time and he could only start three games while playing 14.
He gained the status of regular starter for the team in his second season in which he played 16 games while starting 15. Jenkins registered a total of 49 tackles in the season.
In his third season with the Cowboys, Jenkins played and started all the 16 games in which he posted a total of 55 tackles.
Last year, however, he could only play and start 12 games in which he made a total of 24 tackles.
He is into last year of his contract and different reports recently suggested that Cowboys would trade him.
Jones, on the other hand, has different views. He thinks that Cowboys could have four cornerbacks in their squad.
He said:
"I think we've got the resources to have three top corners, and (Orlando) Scandrick, which in my mind would be a fourth corner. That area of your money allocation just happens to be an area where if you plan right to get strong at corner and strong with
the pass rush, you're going to spend some money out there."
Now that Jenkins has received the much needed job security he should work hard to live up to the expectations.
