Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones not ruling out Jason Witten against New York Giants – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is not ruling out tight end Jason Witten for the regular season opener against New York Giants to be played on September 05, 2012.
Witten, who has been very consistent throughout his entire National Football League (NFL) career, is out with a spleen injury that he suffered in the first preseason game against Oakland Raiders.
The injury forced Witten out of the next three preseason games and his status for the game against Giants is still not clear.
However, it was earlier reported that the Cowboys were pretty satisfied with the tight end’s recovery and they might include the player in the squad against Giants. Witten’s participation will be a game-time decision.
Now Jones’ remarks have further clarified the situation around Witten’s prospects. The Cowboys owner told USA Today:
"It's certainly not impossible to think he could be in the game So we'll see how it works this week. We'll have to handcuff him to keep him off the field. We will literally have to tie him to a post to keep Jason off the field."
Jones also shed some light on Witten’s status and said that his injury is not very serious. He is hopeful of the player’s recovery and said that the team would take a look at Witten’s condition next week. Jones said of Witten’s injury:
“It has to basically show signs that it's mended. And there's some traditional rules of thumb they (medical staff) have. But the nature of his injury was a Grade 1 out of 5 spleen injury. He recently had a CAT scan look and it was on the mend. And we'll
take a look at it next week."
When Witten received the injury, it was believed that he would need a surgery, but later it was revealed that the surgery was not required. If the player had gone for surgery, he would have been out for at least four to six months. He might have even missed
the entire 2012 season.
As per the current reports, even if Witten is unable to play against Giants, he will be available from Week 2 of the regular season.
