Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones rubbishes rumours related to Plaxico Burress talks – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has rubbished the rumours claiming that the Cowboys are interested in signing unrestricted free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress and that both parties had preliminary talks in this matter.
Although the Cowboys do have a roster spot for a receiver, Jones has denied even considering Burress for the position. According to the details present on the team’s website, Jones said:
“We haven’t even discussed that internally at all. That’s not been discussed at any level of our organization, one way or the other.”
The void at wide receiver was created when Laurent Robinson left the Cowboys and joined the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this year. Throughout the offseason, the Cowboys’ management has asserted that it will look at the players available on the roster to
fill in the spot.
There were some talks about acquiring any player from the free agency or get someone through trade, but the management maintained that the players on the squad will be the first ones to get a chance.
Jones has again echoed the same views and said that the Cowboys will introduce some young players at wide receiver during preseason games and monitor their performance. He said:
“We would look at any option. A lot of Laurent (Robinson) was his availability that caused us to look at him. If someone should become available that we were interested in, but we’re not trying to trade and we’re really looking forward to this round of preseason
games to look at these young guys.”
Earlier, different reports claimed that the Cowboys were in contact with Burress’ agent, but Jones denied these reports. He admitted that there is a need of third receiver and said:
"We're going to go to war with, so to speak, or go into the season with question marks at the third receiver.”
Burress, 34, last played for the New York Jets. In his National Football League (NFL) career, Burress has represented Pittsburgh Steelers, Jets and New York Giants. He even won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in the 2007 season.
Last season, Burress scored eight touchdowns while gaining 612 yards for the Jets.
