Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shows trust in WR Andre Holmes – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has expressed faith in young wide receiver Andre Holmes, saying that he could get a lot of playing time in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season.
Holmes, who is yet to make his NFL debut, has impressed Jones with his consistency during the offseason.
Since the Cowboys are short of one receiver, the management was already looking for someone to fill the spot.
A day earlier, some reports suggested that the Cowboys were in talks with unrestricted free agent Plaxico Burress. However, Jones later denied those reports, saying that they had not even considered selecting Burress.
The Cowboys have maintained throughout the offseason that they would try to select someone from their roster to fill the position rather than going for trade or free market hiring.
Holmes, 24, has participated in the Cowboys practice squad and remained active throughout the offseason. According to the details present on the team’s website, Jones assured that Holmes will get more playing time in the upcoming season. Jones said:
“Holmes will get his opportunities. I’m seeing him be more consistent. He is getting his assignments down better, for a fact, and you know he’s got that height and got the ability to catch the ball. So that’s why he’s certainly someone that’s got a chance to get to play a lot this year.”
Cowboys will face Oakland Raiders in their first preseason game on Monday August 13, while they will take on San Diego Chargers on Saturday August 18.
At present, there are many rookies present on the roster and Jones wants to see how they perform during these two games. The management is still looking to finalise the 53-man squad that will go in the regular season and performance of these players during the preseason games will determine their future course.
Jones maintained that he will focus on performance of youngsters during the preseason rather than monitoring the veterans. He said:
“We need to see players and make sure that they can play when the lights are on the way that they practice out here. And that, to me, is what these first two preseason games are about.”
