Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones speaks of trust level in quarterback Tony Romo – NFL News
Since Dallas Cowboys’ last game that was played against Carolina Panthers, questions have started emerging regarding the level of trust the team has in quarterback Tony Romo.
With some time left on the clock in the final quarter against Panthers, head coach Jason Garrett decided to go for a field goal to get the go-ahead scoring attempt. Garrett could have asked Romo to continue the playing drive and go for a touchdown, but he
preferred a field goal attempt.
This gave birth to some questions regarding the team’s trust in abilities of Romo, who has struggled to be himself during the last few games.
Garrett’s decision to go for a field goal can also be attributed to Cowboys’ defeat against Baltimore Ravens a week before Panthers’ game.
The head coach did not manage the clock properly and asked his kicker to attempt a field goal from over 50 yards. The kicker failed and Cowboys lost.
Garrett did not want to take the same risk against Panthers by taking the game to the end and instantly decided to get the go-ahead field goal when the opportunity was presented.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones also supported Garrett’s call, but admitted it was somewhat conservative. According to the details present on the team’s website, Jones said of the head coach’s move and trust in Romo:
“I think Jason when he's done it, has felt that there's less, be more conservative running game specifically and have a better chance to win the game. I don't view that as trust, one of the things that we thought we would have a heck of an advantage.”
He added:
“Tony sees so well and makes good decisions before the ball is snapped. That we wanted to get all that we could get to some degree and it created other issues, relative execution offsides penalties, those kinds of things, so we have cut that back.”
Meanwhile, Jones also said that he does not want to take Romo’s natural abilities away from the quarterback, saying that he must be himself on the field.
It is not clear what strategy the Cowboys will use against the defending champions New York Giants this weekend.
