Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones sticking with coach Wade Phillips
Although all has seemingly been lost this season for the Dallas Cowboys, owner Jerry Jones has reaffirmed his commitment to head coach Wade Phillips.
On Friday, 5 November, the outspoken owner indicated that Phillips’ job is safe, at least until the end of the year.
The Cowboys, who are currently 1-6 and find themselves in the midst of a four-game losing streak, have been a major disappointment this season, after many pre-season pundits tabbed the team as Super Bowl contenders.
Although Phillips has inferred at the possibility of making some coaching changes following the squad’s dismal start, it is apparent that he is disappointed, both in his team and for his owner.
"I don’t worry about losing him," the head coach said of Jones during a press conference on Monday afternoon.
"I worry about losing for him. I feel bad for him because I think we should have been doing better. The guy does everything I think possible to try to win and have a winner, and he’s an excellent general manager. He’s gotten us good players."
Though Jones has essentially admitted that the aspect of making a coaching change had crossed his mind, the owner does not feel as though replacing Phillips, at this point in the season, will have the most positive repercussions for the team or its fan base.
"I’m trying to evaluate what our best chance is, not only for our team, but to leave the taste in our mouths that the fans deserve," Jones told the media after last Sunday’s 35-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
"I’m trying to evaluate that."
So Jones has decided to, at the least, finish the season with Phillips at the helm. "There’s a lot of things you can do that would go in the category of feel-goods," the owner said of Phillips’ potential firing, "although they would kill me relative to changes.
It would be hard, hard for me to do."
