Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones supports head coach Jason Garrett’s call – NFL News
Before securing victory over Carolina Panthers last Sunday, Dallas Cowboys were defeated by Baltimore Ravens a week earlier.
The Cowboys could have won the game against Ravens as well, but they wasted some time towards the end of the game and instead of gaining some extra yards they asked Dan Bailey to attempt a field goal. Bailey missed the 51-yard attempt and the Cowboys lost.
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett was criticised for not managing the clock properly and the pressure took its toll on the head coach against Panthers.
In the final quarter, Cowboys were trailing by one point when they got an opportunity to continue playing drive and go for a touchdown. However, Garrett called Bailey to attempt a field goal instead of going for a touchdown that would have given them a healthy
advantage if the score was made.
Bailey kicked the ball successfully and got the go-ahead goal, but Panthers were still in the game and a score from Panthers could have given victory to them. However, their quarterback Cam Newton struggled on the final drive and Cowboys luckily got the
possession. Cowboys scored another field goal that eventually sealed the win.
After the game, many questions were raised on Garrett’s call for going for field goal instead of a touchdown on the first scoring attempt in the final quarter, but Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has backed the coach’s call.
Jones said of Garrett and the call, via The Dallas Morning News:
“I felt that was a conservative way, that was a conservative call and I’m not, but the big (question) is well should we be having a conservative call and I can make a good case and point that it called for that. We certainly wanted points, that’s for sure.”
Jones added:
“I thought he took the points, took the field goal and I thought that was conservative and the right way to win the game. I would like to see the game put away right there, but there are many things that we all would like. That’s in the name of just winning
it right there."
