Dallas Cowboys’ performance review in the National Football League regular season – NFL Special (Part I)
Popularly known as America’s Team, Dallas Cowboys started the regular season of the National Football League (NFL) reasonably well.
They were contested by the defending National Football Conference (NFC) – East division champions, Philadelphia Eagles, the present division champions, New York Giants, and the lowly Washington Redskins in the division.
The Cowboys enjoyed leading the division for a few weeks in the season, but they just could not finish off the season well and gave away their chances of reaching the playoffs.
In this article, we are going to have a glance on how the performance of the Cowboys throughout the season.
At New York
The Cowboys started their campaign in the season when they visited New York to play the Jets.
The Cowboys started the game well and quarterback, Tony Romo, sent two touchdown passes coupled with a field goal to give the Cowboys a seven-point lead by the end of third quarter.
They began the final quarter by scoring a touchdown in the first minute. However, the rest of the game was dominated by the Jets, who scored two touchdowns and a field goal within the last 12 minutes to get a decisive three-point lead over the Cowboys.
At San Francisco
After being defeated by the Jets, the Cowboys travelled to play the 49ers and registered their first victory of the season.
At the Candlestick Park, the hosts were leading the game until the third quarter, but the Cowboys managed a touchdown and a field goal to level the scores and force the game to overtime.
Dan Bailey scored a 19-yard field goal in the overtime to give Cowboys a victory.
Tony Romo was brilliant throughout the game. He completed 20 of 33 attempted passes for 345 yards while throwing two touchdowns.
Against Washington Redskins
The Cowboys hosted their first game of the season against the Washington Redskins.
The Cowboys continued their reliance on field goals, and in a low scoring game, Dan Bailey scored six field goals.
By the end of the third quarter, the Redskins had a four-point lead after scoring a touchdown and three field goals.
The Cowboys managed to score two field goals in the final quarter while preventing the opposition from scoring any point to get another victory.
Against Detroit Lions
The Cowboys really gave this game away.
When the Lions visited Dallas, a thrilling encounter was on the card, but the Cowboys failed miserably at the end after dominating the game at the start.
At halftime, the Cowboy were leading 20-3, thanks to two touchdown passes from Tony Romo and two field goals by Dan Bailey.
In the third quarter, the Cowboys scored a touchdown and a field goal, but Romo threw two interceptions, both were returned for touchdown by the Lions.
In the final quarter, the Lions scored two more touchdown accompanied by a field goal to end the game at 34-30.
At New England
After resting during a bye week, the Cowboys visited New England to face the Patriots, who were the contenders for the Super Bowl.
The defence of both the teams performed remarkably well and contained the respective opponents. The Patriots scored two of the three touchdowns of the game to get victory.
The Cowboys once again displayed sloppy performance.
With just less than a minute left in the game, they were in lead, but Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, sent a touchdown pass with 22 seconds left in the clock to secure a victory.
