Dallas Cowboys providing high-tempo practice to rookies – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys’ rookies, who have either joined the team during the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft or after it as undrafted free agents, got to know the professional and competitive nature of the league during the team’s minicamp during which
the tempo of practice was far beyond their expectations.
Gone are the days when they used to play for any college team and their transformation from a college player to a pro will need plenty of rigorous workouts; something they will get acquainted with quite soon, according to Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Garrett talked to reporters and discussed about what the management was planning to achieve through the minicamp.
He said of his conversation with the rookies:
"We told them the whole thing was going to happen fast and the pedal was down. I think they now understand what we mean by that. We installed a lot of plays on offence and defence.”
Garrett pointed out that Cowboys’ rookie minicamp is different from other teams and said that he wants his players to get well aware of the offensive and defensive schemes and playing conditions as soon as possible.
The head coach said:
"We had real football practices. Teams have different approaches when it comes to rookie minicamps.”
He added:
“A lot of teams focus on running 40s or how high they jump. We feel like it's more important to play football and try and get them more acclimated to what we try to do with our offensive and defensive systems and how we play special teams, and as quickly
as we can."
Meanwhile, Garrett also shared his views regarding presence of third wide receiver in the squad.
At present, Cowboys have Miles Austin and Dez Bryant to serve at wide receiver position and with the departure of Laurent Robinson to Jacksonville Jaguars, the third receiver position is vacant.
Garrett asserted that the presence of third receiver on the roster is necessary and while mentioning that he wants to make every role on the team ‘as competitive as possible’, the head coach hoped that one of the rookies would fit into the role of the third
receiver.
