Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo depicts mental toughness – NFL News
Even though nature of the National Football League (NFL) is very competitive and physical, for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, this is what makes this sport fun.
Unlike many other players, Romo has accepted physical and rough nature of the sport, saying that it presents more challenges to players.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Romo, who received many hits during Week 3 game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has shown mental fitness by accepting the challenges thrown towards him. He said:
“It’s part of playing quarterback in the National Football League. Sometimes people are going to hit you. They’re good players on that side. Guys up front are battling. It’s always going to be tough, because you’re always going against a new defensive line,
a new scheme, so that part of it makes it a great challenge for our guys. So that’s what makes it fun.”
In general, there is not much a quarterback can do to avoid getting hits. After any snap, it is the responsibility of a quarterback to stay in his pocket and release the ball effectively and quickly. In some cases, he might also leave the pocket to generate
scoring drives.
The task to protect a quarterback is taken up by guards who ensure that oppositions’ defence do not reach the quarterback, who has the ball and focuses more on finding his receivers rather than worrying about getting hits.
Romo has also acknowledged that he can do his best to avoid hits but everything is not in his hands. At times, Romo has supported his guards by deceiving defenders who come at him after beating his guards.
The Cowboys quarterback is of the view that it is because of the teamwork that he and other players have managed to perform well. Romo said:
“If someone gets beat, my job is to help them out once in a while.”
He added:
“That’s part of my job, is to do that, and they’re going to make me look better on other plays.”
Romo has already been sacked seven times this season and with 14 more games left in the regular season the number is expected to further increase. Mental toughness is what keeps a player going and Romo seems to have developed it.
